my niece and I have parallel stories. I feel like I've gone back in time 30 years and brought my baby self here in the present to raise It was like God healed all my past hurts by giving me a second chance to love me through the eyes of a damaged adult. Me healing through love and understanding from the other side of the perspective that let me explain. It's amazing how my niece and I have similar life experience that have crossed generational lines. I am to my niece what my grandmother was to me. My saving grace, my refuge, my light in the middle of darkness. I love my mother and father for who they are, despite their own set of emotional, physical and mental disabilities. Nonetheless, I struggled with feelings of not belonging and rejection. The circumstances of my mother's mental condition and the environment in which she raised me presented its own set of challenges. I questioned myself esteem, value and self worth in the world. I understand now why God strategically chose my mother and father to be my parents. He was preparing me for such a mission is this had to live my testimony. Before I could share my testimony, my mother raised us off Simpson Road The rough side of Atlanta, Georgia It's an area plagued by drugs, violence and economic disparities, even to this day, the place where diamonds are made under pressure and sometimes hidden behind all the labels and shame. I remember walking home from the corner store and dodging bullets by hiding behind a dumpster. I still remember waking up early on Saturday mornings to walk three blocks or more with my mother and sister to the neighborhood Community Center day eat a warm breakfast during the summers. My mother soon got to a place where she could no longer sufficiently care for my sister and me. The Department of Family and Children's Services stepped in after a neighbor made a life changing phone call.
