day after day, President Abraham Lincoln peered through a spyglass from his third floor office in the White House. Anxiously, he looked past farmlands and grazing cows down the Potomac River toward the Chesapeake Bay. At on hours of the day and night, his advisers found him sitting nervously in the small telegraph office in the War Department, waiting for news. It was the spring of 18 61. Lincoln had special cause to be worried. His spies and Virginia had reported that the young Confederacy of the United States was building a deadly new kind of war ship protected by iron sides instead of wooden ones. It was for news of the ship that he waited and watched.
