There is a long and noble history of the National Guard serving at home and abroad to ensure the safety and freedom of their fellow citizens. Since 16 36 the guard has brought glory and honor upon itself and its soldiers through quiet and selfless service, always ready always there. When 10 year old Amelia Mary Erhard saw her first plane at a state fair, she was not impressed. It was a thing of rusty wire and wood and look not at all interesting, she had said. It wasn't until Erhard attended a stunt fine exhibition almost a decade later that she became seriously interested in aviation. A pilot spotted Erhard and her friend, who are watching from an isolated clearing and dove it. Um, I am sure, he said to himself. Watched me make them scamper. Erhard, who felt a mixture of fear and pleasure, stood her ground as the plane swooped by, something inside her awakened. I do not understand it at the time, but I believe that little red plane set something to me as it swished by. On December 28th 1920 pilot Frank Hawks gave her a ride that would forever change her life. By the time I got two or 300 feet off the ground, I knew I had to fly.
