EXPLORE CANTONESE VOICE OVERS

Cantonese Chinese is spoken by over 100 million people. The language is spoken around Canton (Guangzhou) and its surrounding areas in southeastern China. While Cantonese and Mandarin do share some characteristics in common, the two dialects are almost indiscernible due to differences in the way words are pronounced, grammatical differences and vocabulary. In Hong Kong and Macau, many people refer to Cantonese as “Guangdong Speech” or just “Chinese.” Mainland China is seeing the term used more and more among native speakers and those who have learned the language. As a prestige dialect, Cantonese is the official spoken form of the Chinese language, used in the official Hong Kong government, and in a legal capacity at the country’s courts and tribunals. Cantonese is also used for instruction in schools, in conjunction with English.
