Job Description

Three brief voiceovers needed for documentary tv show, "Philadelphia The Great Experiment." The character is the city's founder, William Penn. In the first two, he is in his late 30's - in the last one, he is in his late 60's.

Penn was born in 1644 in London. He grew up in a military family during the English Civil War and the English-Dutch Wars, and converted from the Anglican Church to Quakerism.

Penn was a complicated individual - at times a radical activist for freedom of religion, social outcast, adviser to the King, and visionary city planner. The early Quakers were outspoken, passionate opponents of the Church of England. Penn was jailed frequently for preaching in the streets, though he later gained immunity from persecution through his father's ties to the King. He founded Pennsylvania and Philadelphia in 1682 as a safe haven for Quakers, and it quickly grew into the most prosperous and diverse colony in North America.
