Gravitation

According to legend, Newton was walking in his orchard when, suddenly, an apple fell from a tree. At that moment, he would have asked himself if the force that attracted the apple towards the ground was not the same as the force that kept the Moon in its course around the Earth. The reply is ‘yes’, and Newton drew up a law, which is still used today: the law of gravity. It says that all bodies attract each other according to a force that depends on their mass, that is to say the quantity of matter they contain. This force is gravitation (or gravity). It governs all movements in the Universe. It is this that makes the Moon revolve around the Earth, the planets around the Sun. It is this again which prevents the stars from slipping out from their galaxies.

Halley and the comet

In 1682, a comet appeared in the sky. Being inspired by Newton's theory (because the comets themselves also revolve around the Sun, thanks to gravity), Edmond Halley calculated that it was the same comet that had already been sighted in 1531, then in 1607. He even predicted that it would return 75 years later. Neither he nor Newton, dead at that time, could be present on its return, but it was a victory for the theory of gravity. The famous comet since bears the name of Halley.
