Job Description

The educational video will be shown in our long-term exhibition "Intersections. World Arts. Local Lives.", which displays the collections of the Fowler Museum. Videos will give context for the objects of cultures from different parts of the world.

This script is for a 5-minute video on the Barong procession in Bali. A native dancer will talk about his experience with the trance, the narrator will introduce and explain.

Please note, Barong is being pronounced bArong with a hard R.

THE SCRIPT:

The people of Bali find many opportunities for making religious offerings. They are aware of the invisible forces that may disrupt their daily lives or may even be present at cremation ceremonies. For this reason, they always honor the deities through prayer and offerings.

Once every six months on the new moon, the community gathers to bring out its Barong. The Barong is considered the village guardian and the expeller of misfortune.

The village temple is decorated and mantras are said over the offerings so that the Barong can be removed from its storage place.

The Barong is carried in procession around the village. People feel it has the power to drive away misfortune or illness. In each street the procession passes, people pay homage to the Barong.

At night, the Barong is danced to complete the ceremonies. The people of the community gather row upon row to watch as the music begins and the Barong dances. They believe a ray of light will mark the moment when the deity comes into their midst.

It is not the length of the trance that matters, but the belief of the people. For example, in the performance we have just seen, when a dancer goes into trance, it means that the protection of the deity is manifest.
