INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY - PRESENT 1
Andres(42) walks into the small living room. His son Dre(12)
sits on the couch sadly starring at a magazine with a fancy
BMX bike on it.
ANDRES
(smiles)
Dre, I have something I want you to
see.
DRE
What is it, dad?
ANDRES
(giddy)
Come into the garage and I’ll show
you.
Andres leads an anxious Dre into the garage.
2 INT. GARAGE - CONTINUOUS 2
ANDRES
Surprise!
Dre peers at an old bike in the corner
focus; not in full view>. He appears a bit confused.
DRE
Dad?
ANDRES
Well, since we couldn’t afford the
fancy bike you wanted, I pawned a
few things and was at least able to
get you this one... she’s all
yours!
CUT TO: Dre’s terrified face as he gulps. DRAMATIC HORROR
MUSIC hits (like Psycho). CLOSE UP: the beach cruiser bike
has rusty butterfly handlebars and a large banana seat. Worn
out streamers hang off the old hand grips. The frame is rusty
and looks like a 70’s nightmare.
ANDRES (CONT'D)
I used to have one just like it.
DRE
Dad, you shouldn’t have... you
really...
ANDRES
Sabes que? You can even ride it to
school tomorrow!
DRE
(GULPS)
Yeah, uh. Maybe I should wait. I
mean I don’t want to damage it or
anything.
ANDRES
Don’t be silly, mijo. Take it, show
it off to your friends.
DRE
Uh... dad, I... I don’t know what
to say.
ANDRES
Ah, my pleasure, mijo. The look on
your face is thanks enough.
CLOSE UP: Dre has a silly nervous grin on his face.
FADE TO BLACK.
3 EXT. DRE’S DRIVEWAY - MORNING 3
OLD SCHOOL SONG “DO WA DITTY” by ZAPP plays. Dre with a
backpack on his back stares at the old bike then hops on. He
takes a deep breath.
DRE
Well, here goes.
The rusty chain squeaks as he reluctantly rolls away. The
bike wobbles as he pedals. He picks up speed and almost takes
out a mailbox.
4 EXT. SCHOOL YARD - MORNING 4
Kids play and hang out in front of OAKTOWN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
before class. Dre cautiously approaches the school yard and
spots CHICO(12), the arrogant, class loudmouth sitting on the
exact bike Dre wanted. Chico has a crowd of kids around him.
PABLO(11)
(in awe)
Wow, how much did it cost?
2.
CHICO
(cocky)
More than your whole family, Pablo.
Crowd LAUGHTER.
JUAN(12)
Man, you’re totally gonna win the
Xtreme super games with this thing!
CHICO
Please... it’s in the bag. I could
beat anyone with my hands tied
behind my back.
Crowd GASPS in awe. An embarrassed Dre tries to sneak past
the crowd but Chico spots him and calls him out.
CHICO (CONT'D)
(disgusted, pointing)
What is that?
The crowd spots Dre and begin to LAUGH loudly.
BABY BOY (12)
(whispering to Chaz(11)
Ah, man.
CHICO
Look, Dre went dumpster hopping
last night!
Crowd LAUGHTER. Dre winces in shame.
CHICO (CONT'D)
Where’d ya get that ugly thing?
DRE
None of your business, Chico!
The crowd OOHS.
CHICO
Whatever, probably all your dad can
afford... jobless loser.
DRE
My dad was laid off... and he’s not
a loser-- take that back!
Dre steps up to Chico.
3.
CHICO
What are you going to do about it?
The class bully BUBBA (13) steps in between Dre and Chico and
stares Dre down.
Baby Boy holds Dre back.
BABY BOY
Uh, we better go, Dre.
CHICO
(to Dre)
I dare you to ride that old thing
against me in the Xtreme games...
I’ll make you eat your own rust.
Crowd LAUGHTER.
Dre angrily peers at Chico, then nervously glances up at
Bubba. Dre GULPS, then backs down and picks up his bike.
CHICO (CONT'D)
I thought so...
A frustrated Dre rides away. Bubba LAUGHS and throws his
backpack at Dre knocking him off his bike. Dre falls and
lands at the feet of his school crush Maria(12) and two of
her friends. Maria’s friends GIGGLE. Maria sadly looks down
at Dre. Before Maria can get a word out Dre stands up, picks
up his bike and runs away.
5 EXT. STREET SIDEWALK - AFTERNOON 5
Dre walks his bike home. Baby Boy and Chaz tag along.
DRE
I’m the laughing stock of the
school.
BABY BOY
It’s not that bad, homie.
DRE
Yes it is.
CHAZ
You’re right, if I were you I’d
move to China... and they don’t
even sell tamales there.
Baby Boy elbows Chaz.
4.
CHAZ (CONT'D)
What? It’s true.
DRE
Did you see the look on Maria’s
face? She’ll never talk to me
again.
They approach Dre’s house.
6 EXT. DRE’S FRONT PORCH - CONTINUOUS 6
DRE
I just don’t get it. I mean why
couldn’t he have gotten me the bike
I wanted?
BABY BOY
You said so yourself, it’s
expensive and --
DRE
Yeah but “Chico’s” dad can afford
it. (sarcastic) No, my dad has to
be an “artist”, no wonder he can’t
find a job!
BABY BOY
Hey Homie, chill, it’s not his
fault.
DRE
I wish... I wish he would have
never gotten me this stupid bike!
Dre SLAMS the bike down on the porch. He looks up and spots a
sad faced Andres standing in the doorway through the screen
door.
DRE (CONT'D)
(to Andres, apologetic)
Dad, I...
Andres sadly walks into the house.
DRE (CONT'D)
Dad, wait!
Baby Boy and Chaz walk away. Ashamed, Dre walks into his
house.
FADE TO BLACK.
