Shopping for your electricity or Natural Gas through registered competitive electricity & gas suppliers or aggregators of other small businesses may be one of your best ways to manage any rate increases under the new Standard Offer Service from your local utility. Shopping for electricity is not unlike purchasing any other service – it just requires learning a few basic concepts. We recognize that most small businesses are short on time and long on work, so the Public Service Commission has put together recorded answers to questions that you may have. DEREGULATION INFORMATION SCRIPT:
(3:00)

The State of Maryland and Washington D.C. is now open for electric competition for all customer classes in all parts of the state and the District of Columbia.

The introduction of competition into the electric industry can create significant benefits to electricity customers.

Some reasons for moving to a competitive electric market are:

To put downward pressure on costs, thus providing consumers with the lowest possible prices for electricity and to allow all customers to choose their power supplier.

The Standard Offer Service (SOS) is the alternative to purchasing electric supply from a competitive supplier. By law, the availability, procurement, and pricing of The Standard Offer Service are overseen by the Public Service Commission.

The Standard Offer Service pricing resulting from this year's procurement process has gone into effect since June 1, 2006 for business customers.

Small commercial customers, called "Type 1" SOS, who do not buy their generation from a retail supplier, will see the following typical annual bill increases:

35% for Allegany Power.
39% for BG&E.
40% for Delmarva Power and 52% for Pepco.

Mid-sized commercial and industrial customer called Type 2 SOS, who does not buy their generation from a retail supplier, will see the following typical annual bill increases:

41% for Allegany Power
27% for BG&E.
14% for Delmarva Power.
53% for Pepco.

If you are trying to identify money-saving opportunities by shopping the electricity market, and you decide to contract with an alternate competitive retail electricity supplier, your exiting utility will continue to deliver the electricity to your business, and respond to any of your service calls.

This delivery service is still regulated by the Maryland Public Service Commission, and, because Maryland’s new competitive environment only affects the supply of electricity and not the delivery of power, all distribution lines will continue to be maintained by the incumbent utility.

This means electricity consumers in Maryland will still call their local utility company to handle emergencies and to restore power during outages.

Customers in the District of Columbia have been free to choose an electricity supplier other than PEPCO since February 8, 2005 when price caps were removed and PEPCO's Standard Offer Service rates increased by an average of 32 percent for large commercial customers and 24 percent annually for small business customer.

To learn more about how to switch to a supplier, please Press “2” to set an appointment with an analyst, that will shop various suppliers to get a competitive fixed rate for you.
