The Intranet Server Portal provides a secure single point of personalized interaction with Application, business processes, content and people.

By integrating people with business processes and information, Intranet portal improves, ease of use, end user productivity, business agility and mission critical applications.

And portal supports a wide range of pervasive devices, extending access to critical information and applications to mobile and wireless users. Since designers cannot predict how users will organize and interact with their portlets, portal enables end users to drive the integration of their applications and processes at the desktop with security scalability provided for by the intranet server portal.

Intranet Portal benefits Include:

Increased productivity via a single desktop interface

Lower Desktop Maintenance Cost

Reduction in paper based distribution of City documents

Ability to Send Instant Messaging

Collaboration improves Citys overall communication process.

The Knowledge Repository component of the Intranet Portal provides the City of Atlanta its first step towards implementing a Knowledge Management System. By providing a repository that can store critical or frequently asked information, the Intranet Portal allows the organization to leverage its Intellectual Capital. By leveraging existing knowledge, productivity and efficiency can be gain without additional expenditures. The availability of a Knowledge Repository increases departmental collaboration and communication.

One of the benefits of providing a Standard Desktop Interface is the ability to provide critical information efficiently and effectively. The Intranet Portal provides the ability to communicate urgent City news and Alerts quickly. By providing a platform for communicating and broadcasting current news, the Intranet Portal can immediately notify employees of important alerts like major traffic problems, bad weather, or major security issues.

The Calendar Component of the Portal provides the Office of Communications the ability to communicate important activities that are relevant to city employees and officials. The application provides a simple efficient way of noting important events or holidays that provide employees friendly reminders without impacting productivity.

One of the most important benefits of the Portal is the ability to increase productivity. By providing tools for communication and day to day business functions from a single console, the associate is able to access applications without the need to scan for icons, programs, or shortcuts. By providing the list of available applications from a convenient checkbox menu, an associate can access the applications that their business function requires quickly and efficiently.

Productivity tools come in many forms. What makes 1 tool more effective than another is the ability to conform to an individual or a departments own personal preference. The Portal provides Personalization at two distinct levels. First, the My Department component provides the department an opportunity to maintain pertinent information that the associate in that department may need. For example, Standard Operating Procedures, Departmental Policies, and Contact information are just a few items that can be made available at the departmental level.

The Second form of Personalization is provided in the My Desktop component of the Portal. If the user prefers shortcuts or icons, then the My Desktop section enables the user to distinguish whats best for them at an individual level. The flexibility provided by the application increases productivity by allowing the user to work in an environment that encompasses their preferred work habits.

Again the Intranet Portal Benefits Are:

Employee Self Service

Increased productivity via a single desktop interface

Lower Desktop Maintenance Cost

Efficient information delivery lowers compliance costs

Lower cost of Delivering web front ends to business applications

Reduction in paper based distribution of City documents

Ability to Send Instant Messaging

Collaboration improves Citys overall communication process.

To introduce the new Intranet Desktop Portal to City of Atlanta employees in an informal Launch Expo format, the Department of Information Technology will be hosting a Portal Awareness Week. This will include the Desktop portal being displayed on a large screen with representatives from the Web development team, Business Process Consultants, E-Communications, End User Support and Web PIOs to answer questions and get feedback from attendees. The Expo will be hosted at City Hall and City Hall East.

In Phase 1 the portal will have Knowledge Management,
Standard Desktop Interface, City Wide News Alerts and Productivity Center

In Phase II the portal will bring Instant Messaging, Email Configuration and Web Conferencing.

The Department of Information Technology would like to thank all of our City Departments for taking the time out in listening to our portal presentation. And would like everyone to remember that everyones participation is encouraged and needed to help the portal solution to thrive and be successful. Thank You
