Job Description

Looking for a voice actor to play the role of PRIYA, the mother of the main player character in our video game Seneca. This is a project being developed at the NYU Game Center.

We are ideally seeking someone with the ability to self-record their VO.

26 lines total.

Information on the character and game below, and script attached.

The game takes place in Seneca, a commune in West Virginia. The year is 2057. Humans can no longer talk to one another unless they use a translator, called a HARTO, to counteract the effect of Broca Particles. Broca Particles are present in the air and stop people from being able to speak.
Seneca is a community founded on sustainability, science, and self-governance.

Priya is Astrid’s (the protagonist) mother and a systems engineer in Seneca. She pursues personal research projects in her spare time.

Priya’s defining characteristics are integrity, practical logic, and tireless dedication to duty. This makes her a core member of the community, though few look to her for leadership. Rather, she is seen as a necessary foundation in Seneca’s structure, and many people instinctively trust her. Her dedication to tradition, rules, and standards is unmatched, and she takes deep pride in her work. When working on a project, she holds back none of her time and energy seeing it through to the end with total accuracy--whether it is for work or the ongoing goal of improving her daughter.

Priya is extremely responsible and reliable, and always keeps her word. However, she can sometimes be stubborn and insensitive. She sees facts as paramount in any discussion, and rejects anecdotes or unproven ideas as a waste of time.

Priya worked with Beorn, her husband, and his research partner, Mali, on possibilities of a secret world called the Utan. While Mali and Beorn viewed the world as a possible spot for relocation, and the Locals as another culture to learn about and explore, Priya viewed Utan as a resource-rich environment that could be mined to benefit Seneca. When they recognized the connection between HARTO technology and the Utan, this became her single-minded goal.
Their research was ground to a halt when it was discovered by Seneca's leaders, the Supervisors, who feared the Locals and their influence on Seneca society. They outlawed the research as dangerous and unethical. Priya testified against Beorn while he was on trial for his life, and he was executed.

She has since proven herself as a necessary part of Seneca’s structure, overshadowing her earlier shame and her husband’s execution. Her only shame now is her daughter, Astrid, a stubborn and persistent screwup.

While not outwardly emotional, Priya is deeply loyal to those around her and to her daughter. She simply finds it difficult to express these feelings, and does so by pushing Astrid toward her vision of greatness. Astrid does not respond well to this, leading to a strained relationship between the two. Astrid’s friendship with Ruth troubles her greatly, as Priya sees in her daughter the same loyalty (and possibly obsession) that led Priya to her marriage with Beorn, which ended in betrayal and death.

Priya loved Beorn faithfully and deeply before his trial, but she saw his defiance as a betrayal. She testified against him to prove her loyalty to Seneca. She will never forget watching the hope on his face die as she began her testimony.
