IT TOOK HONDA QUITE A WHILE TO FINALLY JUMP ONBOARD THE PICKUP TRUCK MOVEMENT, BUT AFTER RESEARCH INFORMED THEM THAT 25 PERCENT OF PEOPLE WHO OWN ONE OF THEIR CR-V SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES ALSO OWN A PICKUP, HONDA GOT BUSY AND THE RESULT IS THE RIDGELINE. OTHER THAN BEARING A NOTICEABLE RESEMBLANCE TO THE CHEVY AVALANCHE, HONDA’S RIDGELINE TAKES ADVANTAGE OF THE COMPANY’S WELL-KNOWN TENDENCIES TO THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX.

FOR INSTANCE, RATHER THAN A TRADITIONAL BODY-BOLTED ONTO-FRAME SUPERSTRUCTURE, THE RIDGELINE’S PLATFORM IS DERIVED FROM THE SAME ONES FOUND UNDER THE ACURA MDX AND HONDA PILOT SUV’S, THAT HAS BEEN BUTTRESSED WITH 7 HIGH STRENGTH STEEL CROSSMEMBERS WHICH IS MATED TO THE LOWER FRAME AND UPPER BODY—WHICH ARE INTEGRATED INTO ONE PIECE. AND THE RIDGELINE BOASTS AN INDEPENDENT SUSPENSION, UNLIKE MOST PICKUPS THAT TRAVEL ON A SOLID REAR AXLE.

THERE’S LOTS OF INGENUITY IN THE WAY THE RIDGELINE’S PICKUP BED AND STORAGE TRUNK WERE DESIGNED. FIRST, THE BED IS A STEEL REINFORCED FIRBREGLASS COMPOSITE UNIT WHICH DOESN’T REQUIRE A BED LINER. IT’S 5 FEET LONG AND 4 FEET WIDE AND THE FLOOR IS BUILT ABOVE THE REAR WHEEL ARCHES.

THERE’S AN 8.5 CUBIC FOOT LOCKABLE TRUNK UNDER THE BED FLOOR AND TO GAIN EASIER ACCESS TO IT, THE TAILGATE OPENS DOWN AND SWINGS TO THE SIDE LIKE A CAR DOOR.

POWER IS SUPPLIED BY HONDA’S 3.5 LITER OVERHARD CAM V-6, THAT’S BEEN TWEAKED A LITTLE TO BRING HORSEPOWER UP TO 255 WITH 252 FT. LBS. OF TORQUE. A HEAVY-DUTY 5-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IS STANDARD AS IS HONDA’S VTM-4 ALL WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM. TOWING CAPACITY IS 5000 POUNDS AND THE BED HAD A MAXIMUM PAYLOAD LIMIT OF 1550 POUNDS.

THERE’S FOUR WHEEL DISC BRAKES WITH ABS, BRAKE ASSIST, AND ELECTRONIC BRAKEFORCE DISTRIBUTION. TRACTION AND STABILITY CONTROL ARE STANDARD AND SO ARE SIDE AIRBAGS AND SIDE CURTAIN AIRBAGS FOR FRONT SEAT PASSENGERS.

INSIDE THE RIDGELINE, THERE ARE NO LESS THAN 12 INDIVIDUAL STORAGE COMPARTMENTS, SIX CUPHOLDERS AND PLENTY OF 12-VOLT POWER SUPPLIES. THERE ARE OVER SIZED SIDE-MIRRORS, TOO, WHICH COME IN HANDY WHEN TOWING.

THE RIDGELINE COMES IN A SINGLE BODY STYLE, THE CREW CAB, BUT THERE ARE THREE DIFFERENT TRIM LEVELS: BASE RT, MID-LEVEL RTS, AND LEATHER-LINED RTL. THE OPTIONS LIST IS EXTENSIVE AND NEEDLESS TO SAY ANY RIDGELINE CAN BE EASILY EQUIPPED TO MAKE JUST ABOUT ANYONE HAPPY.
