Job Description

History of the Jimmy Carter Work Project

Jimmy Carter's involvement with Habitat for Humanity International began in 1984 when the former president led a work group to New York City to help renovate a six-story building with 19 families in need of decent, affordable shelter. That experience planted the seed, and the Jimmy Carter Work Project has been an internationally recognized event of HFHI ever since.

Each year, Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter give a week of their time—along with their construction skills—to build homes and raise awareness of the critical need for affordable housing. The JCWP is held at a different location each year, and attracts volunteers from around the world.

VO: India is a land of many contrasts.

Its beauty is enriched with breathtaking landscapes, bustling city life, and religious vibrancy. But India’s beauty is tempered by the scars of extreme poverty.

VO: Though India’s economy has blossomed in recent years, many people remain trapped in poverty, desperately struggling for survival. For millions of India’s poor, “home sweet home” consists of cardboard walls and tin roofs precariously fashioned on sides of busy streets.

VO: More than 60 per cent of India’s 180 million dwellings are deplorable, unsanitary shacks.
And with nearly one-fourth of India’s 1.1 billion people living on less than $1USD per day, affordable, decent housing is completely beyond their reach.

VO: Habitat’s mission is to make scenes like this a matter of history.

VO: And that’s why more than 2,000 volunteers from all around the world gathered together for the 23rd annual Jimmy Carter Work Project in Lonavala, India. Partnering with local families, they built 100 homes in less than a week.
VO: Since 1984, former President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn, have given one week of their lives each year to build homes and emphasize the need for simple, decent and affordable housing in the U.S and around the world.
VO: Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian ministry that exists to eliminate poverty housing from the face of the earth, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.
Habitat partners with people from all faiths--or no faith at all--to help build houses with families in need.
VO: This years’ JCWP was especially significant, because it was the beginning of Habitat for Humanity India’s - five-year “IndiaBUILDS” campaign. This ambitious campaign will partner 1 million volunteers and donors from around the world; to build 50,000 homes with low-income families by 2010.
