MAGnetic Expansion Control is a breakthrough technology capable of non-invasively adjusting implants, by expanding or contracting the device inside the body from outside via remote control. The first of many applications for this technology is for the treatment of spinal scoliosis in children.

The MAGEC spinal system is comprised of a sterile single use rod that is surgically implanted using appropriate commercially available fixation components.

The implanted rod or rods, are used to internally brace the spine during growth.

The rod includes a small internal magnet which allows the rod to be lengthened by use of the External Remote Controller or ERC.

Lengthening the rod over time using the ERC is intended to reduce the curve and straighten the spine.

Two short incisions may be used to access the levels of the foundations.

After exposing the spine, the foundation is created at each anchor site utilizing multiple hooks or screws.

The proximal and distal rods ends are then bent as needed to fit securely in the foundation.

The rod ends can also be cut to desired length.

If short incisions are used, the MAGEC rod is tunneled subcutaneously between each anchor site and placed into the foundation.

If dual rods are used, the MAGEC implants have been designed to have the magnets offset so each rod can be independently distracted.

Following surgery the patient will return to the surgeons office

The entire outpatient visit will take only a few minutes.

Confirmation of lengthening may be obtained through an xray.

Periodic Lengthening of spinal rods is performed to distract the spine and to provide adequate bracing during growth.

The current standard of care consists of a manually adjusted growing rod that may require up to 10 additional highly invasive surgeries to adjust the rods.

The use of the MAGEC System will eliminate the need for these invasive, adjustment surgeries and save the patient from the associated complications and physical and mental trauma.

Ellipse intends to expand the MAGEC Technology platform to include innovative and state-of-the art treatments for a broad spectrum of orthopedic deformity uses including a number of spinal , orthopedic trauma and genetic disease applications and has filed numerous patent applications for use of MAGEC Technology for this wide range of clinical applications.
