---------------

Baptist Associations in the United States have existed since the year 1707. From that first Association in Philadelphia, some three hundred years ago, almost 1,200 Baptist Associations have been created. San Felipe Baptist Association is one of them. In 1823, Stephen F. Austin established a colony called San Felipe de Austin. Our Association takes its name from this colony. This Colony was located on the west bank of the Brazos River near the present town of Sealy. It became the colonial capitol of Austin’s Colony.

In the New Testament we recognize the Church as the human agent through which God has chosen to carry out His kingdom work on earth. Our Association does not seek to supplant the church but to support it. One trait of Baptist life is that local churches are autonomous or self-governing. No hierarchy tells a local church how to operate. Self-governing Baptist churches network together to create autonomous Baptist associations. The role and function of an association is to assist, support, and resource the unique, God-given vision of each church to carry out the Great Commission. We affirm the local church as the origin of all kingdom work.

The three priority teams of San Felipe Association include church planting and missions, church strengthening and leader development. We aid churches by providing resources to help meet specific needs. Each of the three priority teams has an annual budget, spending guidelines, and a facilitator. The teams respond as churches request support in fulfilling their God-given mission.

Let’s define San Felipe’s role in Church Planting and Missions. San Felipe partners with congregations who want to start new churches. The Association works with sponsor churches to assist, train and support church planters in specific areas and among people groups. Within the first six months of having a new structure and budget, San Felipe was assisting a Hispanic mission, a Korean mission, and two African American missions. San Felipe also helps churches receive mission training. The Asian American Baptist Church is a prime example.

Let’s consider the priority of church strengthening. Statistics tell us that 73% of Southern Baptist churches are in a state of plateau. Many of these have already begun to decline in membership and participation. San Felipe’s desire is to help such churches regain momentum for the cause of Christ. The Church Strengthening Team seeks to address this with projects such as the Inside Out Worship Conference held at the Grand Parkway Baptist Church.

Let’s consider the priority of leader development. San Felipe recently helped four individuals attend two different Chronological Bible Conferences at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth to promote leader development. Gay Lewis is one who attended.
