St. Petersburg Podcast

Hello, and thanks for listening to the hotelbook® Podcast series.

In this episode, we will be taking you on a tour of the “Window of Europe”: St. Petersburg, Russia. Also known as the “Northern Capital”, St. Petersburg is a vibrant cosmopolitan city known for its unique architecture and culture, with wide boulevards, extensive gardens & parks, bridges , monuments, and sculptures as well as being the home of Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Peter Carl Faberge’, Tchaikovsky, Leo Tolstoy, & Alfred Nobel. The city was modeled on Amsterdam and Venice with canals and bridges all around, so it has a European feel yet is still distinctly Russian in its architecture.

To begin your tour we recommend you start off at Peter the Great Bridge, one of the eight large drawbridges that are regularly raised along the Neva River to allow large ships to pass. Peter the Great founded the city in 1703 and commissioned the whole of Russia to help out by enlisting engineers, architects, scientists, businessman and over 40,000 peasants a year to build it. The bridge he’s named after is one of over a 1,000 that connect over 100 islands in the mouth of the Neva. During the summer, the Neva is famous for hosting the “White Nights” festivals, in which street performers, musicians, & food vendors celebrate the unending twilight and average 72 degree temperature.
