----------------------------------------

The 16th century Flemish
cartographer Gerardus Mercator
sparked a maritime revolution by
introducing a simplified way for
plotting navigational courses.

His idea was to re-project
cylindrical maps onto flat surfaces
in such a way that lines of
longitude and latitude became
parallel instead of distorted at
the earth poles. Although this
mandated a distortion of land
masses, it allowed sea captains to
plot their ship courses in a
straight line instead of the more
complex loxodromes (oblique lines)
that cylindrical maps imposed by
necessity.

The human body is cylindrical and
surgical tracings planned on its
curved surface have by necessity to
be three-dimensional if they are to
go from the front to the back.

If in addition the surgeon has to
introduce another degree of freedom
(like a bend in the operating
table)...

...into the equation, the
distortion can be sufficient to
obviate accuracy and symmetry.
Under such duress, esthetic
surgical results can be a matter of
luck rather than planning.
