Job Description

(looking for a solid casual read)

These quotes are the beginnings of a history lesson in vital innovation

From 2008 to 2011 RIM went from market leader to slow follower, and its stock went from a peak $143. 13 to $16.77

Meanwhile, as Apple innovated, its stock went from $126.14 to a record $413.23

Steve Jobs recognized the only constant is change. And the world is changing…

• In 2011, the world’s population hit 7 billion people
• Over 50% of them are under 30 years old
• Children are now more likely to own a mobile phone than a book

People are connected to the digital space.

Every 60 seconds…
• There are 98,000 tweets
• 12,000+ new ads posted on Craigslist
• 11 million conversations on instant messengers
• 694,445 search queries
• 13,000 iPhone apps are downloaded
• 600+ new YouTube videos go up
• 1,100 arcres of land farmed in FarmVille
• 950+ purchases are made on eBay
• $219,000 in payments are made on PayPal
• and in that single minute, 695,000+ Facebook updates…and 510,040 comments are made all around the world

No other form of entertainment has ever grown as fast as social gaming.

• … Radio took 38 years to reach 50 million people… TV took 13
• Zynga’s Cityville - passed 100 million users in 41 days
Gaming is now is the #2 online activity

50% of Facebook logins are to play games….and it's estimated that by August 2012 14% of people in the world will be on Facebook."

• Farmville farmers outnumber real farmers in the U.S. 80 to 1

The business of gaming is changing too.

• In the early 80’s Atari was one of the fastest-growing US companies of all time. Today, you’ll most likely find Ataris at yardsales and landfills.
• Founded in 2007, Social Game developer Zynga started giving games away and selling in-game virtual goods.
• And guess what: Zynga now generates $969 million in annual revenue
• …In 2010, 10% of mobile gamers would buy in-game virtual goods.
• …In 2011? 46%...
• Incidentally, the most expensive single virtual good ever sold was a spaceship for $330,000 U.S. Mind boggling as it is, that record won’t stand very long.

Today, 70-80% of all mobile downloads are games…
• 61% of mobile phone owners regularly play games on their phones
• Android now has 10 billion app downloads, and is growing by 1 billion per month…
• Apple has over 18 billion….
• billion with a B.
• 84% of tablet owners play games, and 68% spend at least an hour a day on games.
• The mobile gaming industry is predicted to reach $54 billion by 2015…
But you know what? All these big numbers add up to just a tiny fraction of the reasons why now, more than ever, the opportunity for growth lies in digital innovation. Because the numbers are only getting bigger by the second.

If you don't like change… you'll like irrelevant less
