To date, perhaps more than a million U.S. troops have served in Iraq since the invasion, and tens of thousands have shown some signs of serious stress upon their return. Throughout this book you will not only read about some of these stress reactions, but you will also learn how to deal with and recognize many of the symptoms as they arise.
War fighters may or may not return home with what is diagnosed as “post-traumatic stress disorder” (PTSD). Many signs of PTSD may be mistaken for what is now termed by military stress teams as Combat Operational Stress (COS). It has been determined that every participant in a war zone will manifest some symptoms of COS (i.e. hyper-alertness, anxiety, frustration, anger, confusion, intolerance of “stupid behavior”, sleep disruption, etc.), but this does not indicate that the person has PTSD, however re-adjustment issues are common and to be expected. If they continue to worsen and interfere with the quality of your relationships, and with your life in general, then take the necessary steps to get support.
