Hello, and welcome to “Points of View” from The Scientist. “Points of View” is brought to you in association with Johnson and Johnson Pharmaceutical Research and Development - enhancing the health of people worldwide by creating innovative pharmaceutical products.

Points of View is the very best of The Scientist’s blogs. This week in “Points of View” covers subjects as wide and diverse as the ivory-billed woodpecker, the bitter sense of taste and the merging of art and genetics in a new exhibit in Los Angeles.

By now, you have no doubt heard that three biologists are putting into serious question the reappearance of the ivory-billed woodpecker in the southern US. See the Girl Scientist’s blog for some interesting commentary and a lengthy interview with Tim Gallagher, one of the authors of the original Science report on the find.

An improved ability to distinguish the bitter taste of natural toxins in foods may have made a difference in the survival of early humans as they radiated out of Africa, according to a genetic analysis by researchers led by a group at University College London, appearing in the July 26 issue of Current Biology.
