ANNCR VO: Harry’s Bar has long been a popular hangout along the riverside stretch of bars and restaurants at Singapore’s Boat Quay - a stone’s throw from dynamic financial District of Singapore.

In 1995, there was no bigger ego in the room than that of regular Harry’s patron, Nick Leeson. A young, 28 year old Trader, Nick Leeson would soon be known around the world as the man who single-handedly bankrupted Britain’s oldest merchant bank - Barings bank
The austere bank of Barings, founded in 1762, had financed the Napoleonic Wars and was Queen’s Elizabeth’s personal bank.

So how did just one man manage, in a little over 3 years, to bring it tumbling down?

Nick Leeson was transferred to Barings Securities in Singapore in 1992 after quickly proving his value to the bank during his stint in their Indonesia office. It was impressive that Leeson, at the age of only 25 was made General Manager of the Singapore office He was charged with hiring traders and general staff. No one was appointed to oversee Leeson’s own trading activites however. Essentially, Leeson was put in charge of supervising his own trading - a fatal mistake for the bank.
