1857. A large real estate transaction enables the railway line to be extended to Arcachon. Two brothers, the Péreire brothers, bankers of Portuguese origin and shareholders of the company that exploits the Bordeaux-La Teste railway line, buy 96 hectares of forest and create the Winter Town. The new line that is to operate, above all, during summer, will bring bathers, by the train load, to the resort, a train that will be full of aristocrats and the upper middle class. Emile and Isaac Péreire (PÉRAIRE) with the help of the architect, Paul Régnauld, draw up plans for this new town on the forest dune: a curative town, built in order to treat the pulmonary ailments that were so common during the XIXth Century. They build an urban park, an Anglo-Saxon idea, where the use of the site’s natural topography and medical concerns thus favour the wind-break, curved paths. This maze of winding paths is intended to act as a windbreak and thus protect the residents. Thus there is a difference of temperature of 2 to 3 degrees between the lower town and the winter town. Roads are drawn out by the kilometre. The equipment is exceptional for the era: water, raised by pumps up to reservoirs, is then distributed to the VILLAS... named this way because "the word has something of the antiquity and Italianate, which the second empire era so enjoyed".
