1.0 What is De.De.?

De.De. (Device Decoder) develops a new way of combining use of the telephone with viewing of television programmes using the set-top box, namely the digital terrestrial/satellite receiver.
It has been noted how young people, teenagers first and foremost, are accustomed to using SMS and chat a great deal using mobile telephones whilst they watch their favourite programmes.
De.De. connects the telephone to the set-top box, combining the two devices: on the one hand the television can be used to display the mobile telephone’s information (contacts list, messages, etc.), whilst on the other the mobile can be updated in real time with information of the channel to which the user is tuned, thereby making it possible to share information quickly with their community of friends. The advantage for the user is improved fruition of both devices; the advantage for operators lies in increased traffic and greater loyalty to television programmes.

1.1 The idea of De.De.

De.De.’s idea has two different sources. On the one hand mobile phone operators are in search of new ways to maximise use of mobile phones for socialising (chatting). On the other hand experts with their finger on the pulse of the web 2.0 and “social networking” observed, when studying the socialising dynamics in very young people (typically adolescents) that combined usage of television and telephone is widespread.
