I write this letter in highest recommendation of Anthony Charles. It has been my pleasure to work with Anthony over the past six months on the Living History Project at Mount Gulian Historic Site in Beacon, NY, where I am the writer/director of the interactive theatrical scenarios performed on-site and at other venues in the Hudson Valley.
This spring, we created a scenario entitled “On the Side of the Angels” – based on events associated with Mount Gulian during the Civil War. The scenario features two historical persons who lived at Mount Gulian in the 19th century. One of these individuals is the 70-year-old James F. Brown, an escaped slave from Maryland who came to New York State to obtain his freedom in 1828 and quickly became a fixture at the Verplanck estate, where he worked for the rest of his life as coachman, general caretaker, and master gardener. Brown eventually purchased his own land and property, which earned him the right to vote, and became a well-revered member of the local community, keeping a journal for 40 years (which currently resides at the New York Historical Society). The second character in this scenario is Robert Newlin Verplanck, a 20-year-old scion of the wealthy and influential Dutch- American Verplanck family and recent graduate of Harvard University, who joined the Union Army in the summer of 1863, specifically to become a commander of the U.S.C.T. – the United States Colored Troops. Our scenario imagines a conversation between these two widely different individuals on the day that young Robert announces his intentions to enlist and risk his life to abolish slavery.
Anthony auditioned and was hired to portray Robert Newlin Verplanck in this scenario. Performing in living history places many demands on an actor. He must be detailed in his portrayal of a character who still has living descendants, even while we are limited in what we know about him. The actor must work closely with the writer, the director, and the site historians to find the right sensibility for his portrayal in every possible aspect of his personality, and he must also learn as much as he can about the individual he is portraying. He must combine a knowledge of history and an understanding of human behavior into an honest, respectful, believable, living/breathing portrayal. And then he must be able to keep to the script while also interpreting the character further through direct interaction with the audience. It is a daunting task.
Though yet a young performer, Anthony has shown himself to be fully up to these tasks and challenges. He is a delight to work with and absolutely professional in every possible way. He’s deeply committed to his work, wonderfully creative and imaginative, adaptable and flexible, and he has a great sense of humor. Above all, Anthony has crafted a delightful portrayal of Robert Newlin Verplanck, full of passion and a deep understanding of the issues of his life in the moment of history in which he appears. I cannot recommend Anthony highly enough. I would be thrilled to work with him again on any project for which his skills apply. I hope you will give him your highest consideration.

To Who This May Concern,
I am writing to you on behalf of Anthony Charles and to recommend him for
your consideration. Anthony and I worked together on a short narrative film
entitled, Aaron. Anthony's professionalism made working with him an absolute
pleasure. His hard work and research showed in his spectacular performance as
Archie, a principal character that is routed in the psychological breakdown of
the lead character, Aaron. His portrayal of Archie exceeded my expectations. He
also challenged me as a director and we worked together to achieve one of the
best performances in the film. I plan to work with Anthony in the future and
know that I can easily depend on him for anything. Anthony is an actor of the
future and I know I will see him do great things in the upcoming years. Anyone
is lucky to have him in their cast.

Working with Anthony Charles was an extremely enjoyable and rewarding experience, as
his constant energy made him a pleasure to be around.
He took comments and criticism very well, altering and progressing the character in a natural manner. His own ideas and thoughts also surfaced at times, creatively helping the film as a whole.
He was flexible around constantly changing schedules, and was always on time, if not early for every shoot. The professionalism he demonstrated while acting was equally matched by his
friendly and humorous demeanor during down time.
His presence around the set made for a better community, and he was able to remain relaxed even in the more stressful moments of shooting. Anthony also exhibited an extreme versatility in his acting, taking on a range of different emotions that the specific shots required. Overall I loved the time I spent on and off set with him, and would greatly enjoy working with him again.

I first met Anthony Charles when I hired him as an actor for a short film I’m directing called A Matching Set. I had the experience of working with him over the course of a few weeks. He played a supporting role in the film which gave me a significant amount of time to get to know him.
Anthony has a professional demeanor. He was always on time for our shoots and
always came prepared. He had his lines memorized before each shoot
and had an idea of what he was supposed to be doing. I found his performances accurately portrayed the character he was playing. He took direction well in the few occasions where I requested a different kind of performance. On top of his professionalism my crew found him very
courteous and pleasant to work with. He rose above his obligated role as an actor by offering to help my crew whenever possible. On our bigger shoots he was friendly with all the people involved and became an asset for making our extras more comfortable.
I personally believe that Anthony is a great actor and a positive presence to have on any
