While still a relative "newcomer" to voiceover, C. Charles has extensive experience on the business side of marketing and advertising. He has worked as a copy writer, script editor, consultant, producer and video game developer and came to voiceover indirectly as a result of that.
In school and into his twenties, C. Charles pursued acting in theater and television. But, having come from a "show business family" his father, one of the founders of Coach handbags, steered him towards becoming a "businessman". Gradually, the voice and acting classes, community theater, modeling and occasional television commercial were "put on a back burner" as he ditched the jeans & comfortable T's for a suit and tie.
But, a recent "stint" in the online game business presented him an opportunity to voice characters in several video games. From that came a gig to narrate some corporate and training videos (which was my first experiences in a studio and a vocal booth and he had "an absolute blast" doing these that he actually chuckled when they handed him a paycheck (his first paying voice over gigs!!).
In a recent interview he said, "earlier, at various times in my life, on numerous occasions, people have told me that I had "a great voice" in various contexts over the years. I'd often hear things like: "you have a great radio voice", "... a great late night radio voice", "... a stage voice" and even "a sexy phone voice" but that was from a beautiful woman that I am now proud to call my wife!
While its always nice to get compliments like this, I was making a good living trading my own investment portfolios -- options mostly and doing some freelance writing, consulting, copy writing before dabbling in the video game business for a while and other little "projects" which would "catch my eye" from time to time. While I was good at what I was doing and accustom to a generous paycheck, it was fairly technical what I was doing and I had noticed that the things that I would do in my past time were more along the creative lines. Aside from the perks of being my own boss and making some good money, I really didn't enjoy what I was doing with my life. I was working a lot of hours, doing research, charting and re-charting and given the technological marvels that we have today, I would often go for days without interacting with another human being other than my wife! In these uncertain times, I found investing to be very stressful and in the back of my mind, I suppose I was looking to make a change in my life and do something that I really enjoy doing. I started to reevaluate things in light of my recent experiences and started to reflect back on some of the positive feedback I had received for my voice, vocal characterizations and acting in amateur shows, singing and such that I had done for people or in the presence of other people over the years. I realized that some of my biggest fans and best compliments came from my family or close friends so, in order to be objective, I somewhat discounted most of those opinions as biased by their desire to be supportive of me and bottom line, they would be that supportive about pretty much anything that I do in my life. That's what your family (and your good buddies) do! But, a little over ten years ago my sister met and started dating, this guy Mark (of MTV fame, now on Sirius XM satellite radio). So, when he told me that I should do something using my voice; I really had to take this to heart and evaluate things.
I began training with Edge Studio in NY and with several voice over coaches around the country and started to work on my craft continually getting positive feedback from coaches and audio engineers and viola here I am ready to bring to life an animated character, narrate your documentary, promo your product or become the voice of your business in corporate media presentations and on your company's phone system. There is no voice over job that I consider too small. If it sounds like something that I can either bang out quickly and easily such as short raw audio voice files or to add some new employees or new prompts to the corporate phone system or something that lets me draw on my theater background and allows me to interpret a script and create a unique, animated character's personality by using my voice.
