Dale looks back on a twenty-eight year broadcasting career with some fond memories of projects he worked on, places that his career had taken him, and of course many talented people he met and was lucky enough to work with. In the late '70's while Dale was attending High School, he was given the chance to host evening and weekend radio shows at a local radio station.
After graduation, he worked part time at two radio stations, while attending the Radio and Television Arts Program at NAIT in Edmonton, until he was offered a full-time opporunity at a radio station. The '80's brought many changes to Dale's life, but radio remained a priority. In the fall of 1984 with his wife in hand together they set out on an satisfying journey to be a member of a brand new major market radio station in Calgary, Alberta..."The Greatest City in Canada!" That was the station's motto...and he lived it. After a couple of years there, the young couple decided it was time to start a family, and an opporunity was offered to Dale in his hometown where it all started years earlier.
It was there, beyond his on-air and off-air duties, he began working with younger announcers on his own time at his home. Dale found that extremely rewarding, most of all when they went from small town radio straight to a major market radio station. Over the years he held various demanding and time sensitive postions including News Writer/Presenter, On-Air Host in all day-parts, including a long run as Morning Host. Dale also held positions of Music Director, as well as Program Director, and did countless live on-air remote broadcasts. Another of his career highlights was being presented as a Quarter Century Club Member with Canadian Association of Broadcasters towards the end of his broadcast career. Presented during the WAB Convention in Kananaskis, Alberta on June 5, 2004.
Away from radio, Dale held high profile positions in the community as well, including but not limited to a member of the local committee for Alberta's 100th Anniversary in 2005, and perhaps one of his most memorable public accomplishments he was asked to hold the position of Media Relations Chairman for the Town of Edson's 100th Birthday in 2011. The celebration included close to 90 separate events held within a nine month period, including performances by Alberta's Shumka Ukrainian Dancers, and an unforgetable performance by the entire Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.
Dale is not a full-time broadcaster today, however his services are requested to emcee numerous special events, and records your voice over creations from his home studio, which includes everything from short commercials to much longer Employee Orientation and Safety presentations, and everything in between. His voice was also on award winning Travel Alberta commercials that aired June through August 1988, celebrating the completion of the Yellowhead Highway. Dale has included a portion of that radio campaign, on his "Various Format Demo." Throughout his twenty-eight year broadcasting career Dale was employed in small to major market radio, and held various demanding and time sensitive postions including News Writer/Presenter, On-Air Host in all day-parts, including a long run as Morning Host. Dale was in broadcasting well before the computer age, and therefore you really had to read with proper inflection, pacing, and articulation for 30 to 60 seconds. If not, you recorded it again. He remembers the day he recorded 18 spots following an on-air shift, and came out of the production room very tired, and then went right to work preparing for his show the next morning. Dale also held positions of Music Director, as well as Program Director, and did countless live on-air remote broadcasts. Of all his jobs, he took great pride in working with younger announcers assisting them to hone their skills and to make them better at their craft. Of course life has also given Dale experience meeting, and many times exceeding the expectations of clients, and feels confident that he can deliver even with a limited time window.
Dale's education includes the Radio, Television Arts program at NAIT in Edmonton, AB, from there Dale went on to work at various radio stations throughout Alberta including the CJYR Radio Network in Northwestern Alberta, CKST St. Alberta AB., CJOK Fort McMurray AB., CKYL in Peace River AB., CFFR Calgary AB.,and finally CFXE Edson AB. Add to that, life itself, and the school of hard knocks. During Dale's broadcast career, he was one of the guys who made it sound easy, however he will tell you, that it was the numerous hours he put into his career off-air that made it sound that way. If he was not on the air he was listening back to recent shows to improve, and listening to how other talent in the industry at the time, were changing and progressing. You don't stay in the broadcast business and on-air for 28 years if you do not progress. Today Dale is dedicated to his famiy, and is employed as a Heavy Equipment Operator at a Coal Mine in Western Alberta, not far from his home in Edson. He is still learning and at the same time educating others. Dale's full-time job of running a monster 789 Cat Truck Coal/Rock Hauler and giant 24 M Cat Grader in a heavy industrial site allows Dale to talk about what he expeiences everyday when recording safety related videos for industry. Dale's four-on, four-off schedule allows him to submerge himself in his voice over business during his time off.
