James Hofsiss

My voice is deep, warm and friendly. My style can be informative, intelligent, authoritative, trustworthy, neighborly or folksy. I can deliver reads with energy and enthusiasm; authority and gravitas; or in calm, soothing and compassionate tones. I sound like the guy next door, teacher, father or young grandfather, everyman.

Although I am a native Texan, my natural speaking voice is a very neutral North American English. However, I can deliver reads with a Texas, country or Southern accent. I can also perform with a British, Australian or Hispanic accent.

I have been providing voice over and narrations in one form or another for more than 30 years.
From high school plays, to college film projects, to church presentations and radio spots, to Air Force videos and ceremonies, I have always been the go-to "voice guy."

I completed Edge Studio's Phase 2 Voice Over Education program with specialized training in: copy reading and script analysis; narration and commercials; intensive technique workshops; and one-on-one coaching sessions in narration, commercials, and narration; and a special two-day seminar with David Goldbergm, Edge Studio founder and coach.

I served in the United States Air Force as an information systems and network administrator and technician, information systems security officer, and industrial security officer. I have an Associate of Applied Science in Information Systems Technology.

James, I was impressed with the gorgeous deep resonance of your voice! You have a strong, commanding tone that records beautifully and an easy going sound that connects nicely with the listener. Really good command on pitch variety as well - your instincts are solid on the basics here! Really nice to listen to.

Your pacing is ... great for most types of copy. You're naturally articulate ... It was clear that you understood the general concepts of V.O. delivery ... You did a good job hearing mistakes when they were made; having well-trained ears is just as important as having a well-trained voice. ... you used a good amount of variety which made your performance interesting. ... You had good cold readings, which is a great skill ... you were comfortable in front of the microphone, which helped you sound more natural and relaxed. ... you seemed willing to take risks, ... you will be able provide a variety of reads for a copy and may stumble a on certain angle that the director had not considered or knew would work. Taking risks also shows a comfort & confidence in your talent and ability.
You have a definite natural talent. ... Your ear is fantastic. ... you have one of the best tuned-in ears of most students I have worked with. ... you're very good and have potential to do voice-over full time! Your voice is marketable, your reads are great, and most of the basic techniques come easily to you. It’s not every day that someone gets told this, so congratulations!

James has a great sound with minor Southern regionalisms - fantastic reader and takes direction well. We worked through one piece slowly, identifying the sounds that 'place' him in the South, and going over their neutral counterparts. His accent will be great for some spots, and ... he'll be able to adjust easily to neutral for others. When he goes into 'voice over voice' he's practically there; ... neutral in a more natural delivery.

James has been doing very well practicing what he's learned... His voice is sounding really good. ... we talked about copy analysis, and read through a variety of Narration scripts from the library. ... He reads with GREAT variety instinctively ... he's got some good stuff to work on.
Great guy, great voice, great session!

Scott Harlan - http://www.scottharlan.com & http://www.edgestudio.com

James has been practicing with practice scripts and it shows. ... After being directed to try the next read with his hands up - the read changed dramatically, he was connecting with the script, more fluid - Really worked well for James! ...
We worked on a few of his scripts. Good range. Also a couple of cold reads - John Glenn Bio and a Social Security corporate script. Those were great for him.
I'm excited to hear what James does after demo is cut. Great session!
