Vocie of the Chicago Cubs and former Milwaukee Brewers broadcaster Pat Hughes, six-time winner of the Sportscaster of the Year Award, is a long-time associate of Dennis "The VOICE" O'Boyle. Pat of course is currently the radio play-by-play announcer for the Chicago Cubs and the t.v. voice of the Marquette Golden Eagles.

Check out what he has to say about Dennis O'Boyle, right here:
I’m writing on behalf of Dennis O’Boyle, whom I’ve gotten to know fairly well in the last couple of years. Dennis is seeking a change in careers and I can assure you that someone with Dennis’ ability, energy, and creativity would be a major asset to any company.

Dennis has unusually gifted skills in the areas of writing and other forms of communication, as I’m sure you can detect from his comprehensive resumé.

Dennis is not only talented but he has a very level, easy-going personality which makes him easy to get along with-- which ultimately is one of the most important characteristics for anybody in any working situation.

As someone who works in the sports world on a daily basis, I think that people with an athletic background (such as Dennis has) many times are over-achievers in the business world because of their past experiences including competition, stamina, teamwork, and the ability to overcome adversity.

Coach Reeves:
Dennis J. O'Boyle is "... the best announcer that
I've ever heard. He has a job for life at Southern Miss"

Will 'The Voice of God' Bless Southern Miss?

WEST ALLIS, WISC. -- Jan. 24, 2004 -- Prior to coming to The University of Southern Mississippi, Coach Rick Reeves was the very highly successful head coach at Liberty University in Virginia where his teams won back-to-back-to-back conference tournament championships, made three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances, and posted a 71-16 record over that same three-year period.

His record also includes an undefeated 1997-98 regular season (28-0).

On April 15, 1999, Reeves became the third head coach in Southern Miss women's basketball history. This year, for the 2003-04 season, Reeves enters his fifth season at the helm of the Lady Eagle basketball program. In his first season, Reeves' team finished the season with a 17-13 record and a trip to the WNIT and 12-16 in his second season. His team finished fourth in the conference in his first season after being picked to finish near the bottom. His first victory at Southern Miss was his 200th career win.

His coaching honors include being named the Big South Conference Coach of the Year three times, the Richmond Times-Dispatch Coach of the Year, and VaSID Coach of the Year in 1998. One thing is for sure: Rick Reeves has been to the top of the basketball world, and certainly has heard many of the best public address announcers in his travels.

On the last weekend of January, 2004 Coach Rick was in Milwaukee with his team for the game against the Marquette Golden Eagles. Saturday night January 24, he attended the Racine Prarie game at Heritage Christian High School to watch one of his prospects for next season and was impressed by Heritage public address announcer Dennis "The VOICE" O'Boyle.

According to Reeves, O'Boyle is, "the best announcer I have ever heard."

He met with O'Boyle after the game and told him, "I would like to extend the invitation to you to become our official announcer, so if you're interested in coming to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, you have a job for life."

Heritage athletic director Ernie Welborn was standing nearby and remarked to Coach Reeves, "Dennis is the best. One radio station in town here calls him 'The Voice of God', and we are very happy with his work."

O'Boyle remarked, "We are blessed to have Coach Reeves with us tonight, and I will consider his offer," going on to comment that perhaps the university would arrange a position in the Athletic Department involving some publications production, fund raising and other work, including announcing all home games for football, basketball, baseball and more. O'Boyle said with a smile, "If they can offer a position, salary and benefits commensurate with my abilities and experience, it will make the decision easier to consider. In any case, I would not want to end up living in a single room and going door-to-door selling watermelon seeds just to make ends meet."

Southern Miss is also known as "Brett Favre University". It is the alma mater of the Green Bay Packers quaterback and three-time NFL Most Valuable Player.

I met Dennis O'Boyle while he was announcing a basketball game for Riverside University High School which was broadcast on Channel 14, Milwaukee. Dennis needs to write a book. It should be something like, "Motivation...a key to success".

His words of wisdom are almost Biblical. The way he described how Carl Carby and I worked together is simply incredible. Now, I thank him for his kinds words, but Carl and I have only worked a few games for television together.

Dennis's announcing skills are outstanding. What I'd give for a set of pipes like that! Not only is he gifted with a "big, booming P.A. announcer" voice but he is very articulate and symphonic. The latter part is not a gift, that's heart and determination. And one day, he won't be doing high school games or AAU. He'll be the voice of some Major league team or the voice of a major event.

It's meant to be.

And it will happen.

You have my word.

Martin Savasta, Professional Audio-Video Producer, Select Sound Systems: "ONE TAKE. Down at the studio, we call him Dennis 'One Take' O'Boyle. I've never seen anyone like him before. He read a very difficult script for five solid minutes for the marketing of a high-tech product and did it all flawlessly, in one take. Words I couldn't even pronounce in a million years just rolled off his lips like hot melted butter on an ear of roasted corn on the cob. He was amazing, reading that script with passion, with sincerity, with glory, 'The new VCS Switch features patented neodymium magnet technology specially formed with vacuum encapsulated cycloaliphatic epoxy resin.' One take! Smooth, professional, surreal -- unreal. Then I found out he drives a '55 Chevy with a big block engine in it! Awesome!"

Cheerleading advisor from Schaumburg Christian School, Schaumburg, IL: "He drove down here early in the morning then announced for us all day, eight games, for free. He introduced the teams so dramatically, everyone played better and 'The VOICE' made the games more exciting, it was so much fun just to sit there and listen to the announcing. During halftime as he saw the cheerleaders preparing to come out for our routine, he made up a quick but professional intro for us. We couldn't thank him enough and he wouldn't accept any pay. But I was able to give him a candy bar."

Johnny Winston Jr., Referee, WIAA and Wisconsin Technical College Conference: "BEFORE the game, I had never met Dennis so I somewhat sarcastically said, 'An announcer? Are you any good?'
"AFTER the game, I had to eat some crow but said, 'Man, YOU are the GREATEST! I'm sorry for being skeptical earlier. Can I use you to M.C. a block party I'm having later this Summer!?!"

Dr. Clyde R. Anderson, Ph.D., former Illinois football star, "...professional announcer, Dennis J. O'Boyle, worked for me as a technical writer at Abbott Laboratories. Dennis was able to utilize his very distinguished announcing talents during two notable softball games held at Abbott Park. I was not able to attend the games. However, I can say that every manager, including our director, had comments to say about Dennis O'Boyle's skill at making the games very interesting. This was also echoed from all of my staff attending the games as well. The interesting thing is the wealth of knowledge that Dennis had at hand to fill in the idle time within the games. This is a gift. Dennis has this gift. It is not learnable. If you ever have an opportunity to get Dennis to announce for you, you will understand that this is Dennis' calling."

Gene and Dennis first met in 1972 through school chum Todd Ovokaitys, the son of Gene's wife, Dee.

In April 1971, Todd was actually on his way into the apartment building where he lived when Dennis, playing basketball at St. Charles Boys Home just down the hill, called out to Todd to join the game. At the time Todd was attending Pius High School but transferred the next semester to Juneau High with Dennis.

Gene was promoted from captain to major to general, a tremendous career serving our country.
During that time he also spent his off days running a car wash for an old buddy. Ask Gene or Dennis to tell you the car wash story about the '69 Dodge Charger R/T sometime........
