Born in Cumberland in 1952 to Scottish/English parents, I was educated in the private (public schools) system and acquired what would now be called an upper-class English accent. This has mellowed a lot over the years, living first in Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire and from 1988 in the Scottish Borders. I have done voiceovers for industrial films and audiovisuals since the 1970s. As a musician and singer I have always preferred traditional (celtic, folk) material and my reference to 'Scottish' English is not to broad Scots, Lallans or Doric - more a subtle inflection which takes the edge off 'standard English'. I have a very wide vocal range as a singer, including the ability to sing many songs at pitches an octave apart. I am not a good mimic or imitator, and my voice is best used for a quality of softened (not strident) Englishness - I'm told I sound like a 'professor', a doctor, a minister, academic, etc. I'm very much at home with historic characters, ghosts, Victorian authors and can easily sound as I don't come from the 21st century when narrating or reading.
