I can credibly convey educated, comforting, playful, empathic, rough/street, competitive, arrogant, seductive, nebbishy, and shades in between. Tonally, I would place my voice at low tenor but with flexibility up and down without strain. Voice texture is generally smooth and, indicated by recordings from different ages, remains youthful if I am not emphasizing “older” characteristics. I actually AM a psychoanalyst with a philosophy degree and teaching experience, and have been “expert for hire” on several radio and TV shows, and was offered (true story!) the chance to do CNN’s commentary on the mental health implications of Obamacare the day it was presented - I turned it down because A)I was taking my mother to a hospital procedure, and B)I had no insurance-related expertise and didn’t want to be under-qualified on the topic for such a meaningful opportunity - so I don’t have to reach in order to SOUND like an expert with a gentle disposition; I can turn on the arrogance as needed. Despite being an academic and shrink, I’m extroverted in style, play jazz and love to perform; I am an experienced boxer and have been on the inside and outside of the sport for 23 years; I am playful, and genuinely bring a mix of personal qualities, including humility, awareness of my strengths and limits, avoid meaningless confrontations and aim to be seen as someone easy and efficient to work with, with ego never getting in the way. I’m pretty sure I’m accurate about the subjective parts - life seems to have indicated that I am as I’ve described.

I am a beginner at professional voiceover work, but I have had good training - many months with Marla Kirban, extensive drama training at Vassar, improv, theater, student films, a cartoon pilot, a lifetime of music as a singer-songwriter/jazz multi-instrumentalists, with a wide range of tones and styles, and a lifetime of pure playing with voices and accents. As a father, I use my voice daily to delight, teach, and guide my young child. As a practicing psychoanalyst, I have both written about music, sound, and voice, and apply them carefully to the task of reaching people on a healing level. I am approaching voiceover acting now, at age 51, looking and sounding much younger but with a commitment to fulfilling the plan I made years ago to perform and to master the craft of portraying any aspect of being human that is within my reach. I have been encouraged by professional actors and voiceover professionals to stop talking about it and finally do it - I have trained with Marla Kirban as much as possible in person, and attended her guest seminars at every opportunity. This past year, I have prepared in every way I know how, and my novice results have received lots of encouragement. I provide a demo here, and I will leave it to the listener to decide - but this is my story as I know how to tell it.

Voice Over Clients
I’m new to professional voiceover, but the pros I’ve reached out to say I’m cut out for this! I won’t seem like a confused novice if you take a chance on me. It wasn’t voiceover, but I did a nice long bit on Judith Regan’s Sirius/XM show as the psychologist discussing the Sandy Hook killings and the psychological implications regarding the culprit, the victims, the concept, and the public response; I was on Easton PA’s local “Navigating Your Life” TV show discussing relaxation and related issues.
