Richard has been obsessed with imitating and creating voices since he could speak and began answering the phone at 10 months old. Anyone with a character voice in his life can expect to be mimicked! The writer, director, producer first trained as an actor, "In the beginning no one drops work in your lap" the lack of projects to learn from inspired him to create and produce his own work.
A major highlight of his creative life has been the reception of his critically acclaimed and multiple award winning short film "Slingshot". It is currently part of the social studies curriculum in multiple schools across Canada, it was picked up by a National Distributor in 2012. "Slingshot" is a very unique work not only for how it was made but for the deeper layers of the film that asked cultural questions of its cast and ultimately its audience; involving race, religion and basic humanity. The film carries with it an impressive total of 8 Ampia nominations including nominations for Richard in the writer, director, producer categories as well as a nomination for "Best Actor". "Slingshot" won the "Best Short Film" in Alberta category & "Best Make-up" at the 2011 AMPIA's. Richard only had two lines in the entire movie, so did the only other actor. A 20 minute short film with basically zero dialogue! "Slingshot" has been shown great affection from Richards home town and has also been called one of the most beautiful cinematic short films ever produced (Best Cinematography Nomination) with a very clearly defined story despite the films obvious omission of dialogue. A fact Richard is hugely proud of as an actor but more importantly as a story teller. The film was narrowly edged out for "Best Film" in Alberta at the Calgary International Film Festival by The Academy Award Nominated animated short "Wild Life".
The Artist then really showed his range on his next project narrating "60" episodes of the award winning "OMNI's Multicultural Heroes". They are slated for a long run on OMNI/Rogers Inc Television. The series saw Richard with his first nomination and win for "Best Narrator" in the 2013 AMPIA's.
"My interest in media creation is every layer, I know how hard it is to delegate or to let go of any facet of a project, to have to trust someone else with your baby is not easy. I eat live and die creating!", says Richard.
The artist has long been fascinated with the power of film, media & voice. His ultimate goal in Narration is for producers to be able to feel total relief when they hire him for their project, knowing that his area of responsibilities are covered.
"You never know where a project will take you. That's why you simply just have to begin. The power of putting your whole self into something is endless". Richard Hardy
