here we have what is called a cathode ray tube. Inside the tube is a vacuum. When it is plugged in and turned on, array of electrons is shot through the tube. Instead of looking at how a current carrying wire influences a magnetic field and vice versa, we will see how a magnetic field affect single charged particles. When a magnet is brought near the tube, the beam of particles deflect strangely, not in the direction of the field, but instead at right angles. To determine the direction of the force, we use a right hand rule. Point your fingers in the direction of the velocity so that when you curl your fingers, they point in the direction of the magnetic field for a positive charge, your thumb will be pointing in the direction of the force for a negative charge. The direction will be opposite
