a bride four times. I met my first husband when I was 23. Sam, a Jewish man with rich black hair, had a red sports car in a black leather jacket. My Christian mother runs ran her fingers through his chest hair just to tease me about how attractive that was on a man. I was barely surviving as a night cashier at a convenience store and spent most daylight hours in darkness beneath my blankets. Roaches scampered over the floor and nibbled at the little food I had stolen to eat. I would awaken around two PM and overwhelming panic, not understanding why I hated the hour and the sun that went with it. Because of this, I would usually try to bury myself until darkness fell again. I was such a fearful human being that even breathing was painful. It was summer. It lured people to want to touch me in ways that I had become accustomed to but was afraid of Sam was my fairytale prince, who glistened in the sun and had come to take me away and keep me safe. He looked the part with his nice car, good job, stylish clothing in college education. Best of all, he seemed to like me. During the first month of our three month courtship, Sam took me to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for a weekend of fun. I had never seen the ocean before, and at first I was frightened by the waves. Powerful sound. As they rolled onto the shore, I was overwhelmed.
