When his PT109 was cut in half by a speeding Japanese destroyer. He was thrown down into the cockpit and injured his back because he was a champion swimmer. During his Harvard years, he was able to pull his crew to the safety of the wreck until the next day they swam to two different islands before they finally found shelter and food. Then john and a friend set out for another swim to a nearby island with friendly natives. He cut a message into a coconut shell and they met with the new Zealand Forces to be united with the U. S. However, his injuries from the first crash sent him stateside for good. John F Kennedy received the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroism and the Purple Heart
