He never knew his father and his mother died when he was seven years old. During the time he was enslaved. Douglas taught himself to read. And by the age of 20 he had already tried to escape twice. His escape attempts were finally successful in 18 38 when he boarded a train, dressed as a sailor, using the identification of a freed seaman to get aboard.
