Chapter eight Shot down the third time on Valentine's Day, february 14th, 1945 Dahlberg led four planes out of Rosie Renae. Too short time near Metz. They were carrying bombs and their goal was to take out railroad rolling stock. The small squadron destroyed 25 box cars and damaged a factory. Dahlberg was flying the P 47 lettered O on his 64th and final mission. The four planes were coming out of a bombing run at about 2:15 PM. I remember the end of the flight more than the beginning or the middle. I remember saying on the radio, we're back at altitude or we're on our way home. When all of a sudden I saw big puffs of big black smoke. It was from exploding 88 shot from that famous German gun. To think that you could hit a fighter plane at high altitude is pretty good marksmanship.
