When he established the Philadelphia Tribune in 18 84 the Tribune became an important voice for shining a light on discrimination and social problems while at the same time celebrating the accomplishments of the African American community. In 1914 when a mob attacked Mrs Mary Montague in her home in West Philly and an investigation into her cell, it's was never made. Managing editor of the Tribune G. Grant Williams took it upon himself to conduct an investigation. The incident was never reported in the white owned press. After several more attacks went uninvestigated, Williams called this community to action. Quote. Trading upon our rights in Philadelphia is becoming common. Unless we organize and fight it, we shall soon be in as bad a mess as we are in Maryland and other Southern states. Unquote
