a trip to the Falls today is like a trip back through time. You can't see the city because it doesn't exist yet. Right where we're standing. Used to be underwater, People, dinosaurs. And the falls of the Ohio didn't exist yet. This was the Devonian period. It was way before the Jurassic period and dinosaurs. We're talking about 390 million years ago. Back then the land we're standing on now used to be south of the equator and it was much warmer. This whole area used to be under a shallow ocean kind of like what you see in the caribbean today there were sponges and coral growing along the bottom of this ocean. Some were pretty weird looking over time the tiny corals grew together to form a reef by building over the remains of older coral after they died just the way they do today. Okay, so how did the fossils form the reef was built? Then along came a huge storm like a hurricane and covered everything in sand and mud suffocating the creatures below it. And since there's no air, everything is preserved. Gradually the animals, soft parts dissolved, leaving only the hard stuff shells or bony outer skeletons called exoskeletons.
