The second half of this concert is devoted to a single work. The Symphony # two in E Minor, by Sergei Rachmaninov. To tell the stories of Rachmaninoff's symphonies is to give a capsule biography of the composer. Each symphony belongs to a different period of Rachmaninoff's career. There are three titled symphonies, plus his choral symphony, The Bells. Together, they illustrate his lifelong search to find his identity as a composer. It was in October of 1906 that Rachmaninov, his young wife and baby daughter, took up residence in Dresden.
