In august 18 67 a surveying party for the Kansas pacific railroad ventured into the tribal lands of the Cheyenne nation and the Saline river valley near Fort Hays Kansas, the Cheyenne warriors learning of the incursion, rode out tractor surveyors and killed them. Two days later, the Cheyenne engaged with the United States cavalry unit that had been sent in pursuit of them. When the war near the americans, they were surprised. These were not the white faced soldiers they had fought before, Their skin was black, they're fighting ferocious. This was the 10th Cavalry, a regiment of African american veterans redeployed to the great Plains following the Civil War. After a six hour battle, the Cheyenne disengaged and rolled off across the prairie. They had seen a new phone and according to tradition, would give them a new name buffalo soldiers.
