claiming our personal power begins with redefining it too Often people associate power with something outside themselves. This is positional power rooted in externals, rank, job, financial status, the trappings of authority. Many of us feel weak and intimidated around people with more positional power, but we no longer live in a world with divine right monarchy. When aristocrats were considered somehow closer to God, positional power is limited and temporary. It's the series of uniforms people wear beneath which we are all human beings. When people lose their jobs or retire, they also lose their positional power. The other kind of power, the kind that lasts is personal power. This is the power that makes you who you are, your energy, your values, your integrity and spiritual strength. Throughout history, people have exercised moral leadership with the force of personal power. People such as mohandas, Gandhi Albert, Schweitzer, Eleanor, Roosevelt, Helen Caldicott mother, Teresa, who they were transcended rank or title, giving meaning to their lives and inspiring those around them. Following the tao of womanhood, we can build our personal power by becoming more aware of what we value as we clarify our vision. Our choices become spiritual exercises, becoming more mindful. We learn to avoid detours, attitudes and actions that drain the power from our lives. One detour is holding ourselves back because we don't want to be selfish. This traps us into a reductive false dilemma in which we feel that exercising our power means depriving someone else either or all or nothing, us or them, you or me. But life is very rarely that simple choosing for yourself need not mean choosing against someone else. It may open up new possibilities for everyone.
