Hello everybody. Welcome to Miles Creative Project. And you're listening to Anita, Miles before starting, I'd like to introduce briefly the reason behind this podcast. Actually, there is no particular reason. It was just a challenge that I proposed to myself because I wanted to do something different and important. At the same time, this is the opportunities to speak up and share my thoughts. This project was born almost a year ago to promote literature. My goal is to discuss about books or poems and to relate them to a particular topic to make people think and stimulate them to read more. Yeah, big challenge. But why not a book contains a story which can be true or just pure fiction may be boring or fantastic. But it helps you to forget just for a while what is happening around you. I took time to think about which topic to pick up. At first, it was not a piece of cake, but then I chose to talk about literacy. What is literacy? There are many definitions. It is the ability and the confidence to engage with language. It's the way of thinking about understanding and expressing thoughts or ideas. Or simply described as the ability to read, write, listen and speak annually on the eighth of September, literacy is celebrated to remind the public of its importance as a matter of human rights raising awareness and concern for literacy problem become a mission to improve this skill through new pedagogies and teaching methods. Despite the progress made till now, there are more than 700 million people among youngs and adults that are lacking basic literacy skills and therefore do not feel free to communicate correctly with other people. And think critically, literacy is at the base of our independency. And without it, you may feel locked out of the world. Just imagine yourself in a town or a village far away from. Where are you currently living there? You don't know the local language and people don't speak anything else different from there. You can express yourself, you try to mind but they don't get it. How do you feel lost and confused? Those are the possible answers. Therefore, I care a lot about literacy. People should not feel that way, but it's hard to find the right help. Nelson Mandela once said education is the most powerful weapon for changing the world. I agree but not completely because it's the word itself, the most powerful weapon, the drive in force, the ability to use. Well, words is not correlated to having higher education. As society induces us to think to a mandatory school you should learn. And improve your literacy skills and people should prepare Children for, for the other words. However, there are a lot of factors that affect the process. Sometimes it depends on how teaching is established in structure. Teachers have an important role that can make a difference if they know how to involve young people with their words and voice. Nowadays, there are few good and compelling ones but other Children are really hard to handle and motivate. Just think about a person who won't read has no advantage over one who cannot. That means that people that do not embrace every opportunity to extend their own general knowledge cannot be better than an illiterate person who needs help to achieve that minimal goal. Therefore, reading is the first step to improve literacy. And maybe you have heard the following typical sentences. I hate reading, Blair, reading is boring. I don't like reading. You know, that there are three main reasons that lead to disliked reading, ability, interest and mindset. And for each reasons, there are also motivations that I have experienced that I want to list when you have no interest on reading. There are two motivation. The first is you feel reading is a must and it's always associated to education you did for your teachers, for study and never for yourself, you developed like a pressure that pushed you away from this activity that took time which you didn't have and you won't invest on it over something better and easier. The second is the lack of exciting sources. Maybe that reading is not appropriate for your age. And as a wrong choice, you sentence reading as irrelevant and boring and you give up so easily when you are not able to read, it doesn't mean that it's something that would not change with practice. There are kids and also adults that suffer from dyslexia. And ADHD, dyslexia is a reading disorder that causes difficulties on comprehending and or processing information. Adhd means attention deficit hyperactivity disorder that is characterized by a lower attention span, which means not able to concentrate well. For a longer time, you get easily distracted when you are in front of over stimulation of infos as consequences. There will be a loss of involvement because they cannot focus. Both cases can be handled during childhood by having tutors, patients and a therapy support. It's not possible to eliminate completely the problem, but you can improve slowly literacy skills. When reason of dislike in reading is a mindset, then there is no easy solution to find because sometimes it's an environmental affection as family with no reading habits or promotion of sport activities over intellectual wants. Even psychological insecurity should be considered. For example, someone that read perfectly and quickly can affect someone that read too slow, making a sort of fear to try to get better. And the bad reader can be affected by negativity that lose the hope to improve and dislike the skills. We is not good. I don't go further because there are so many scenarios and I don't want to lose your attention. But to conclude, I think that the easy way to help people with literacy problems is to make things easier and accessible to everyone. Using easy and uncomplicated sentencing to explain everything. A lot of patience and creativity to, I want to read a poem by Emily Dickinson that explain the reason and the importance of literature. There's no frigate, like a book. There is no frigate like a book to take, lends away nor any cursors like a page of prin in poetry. This traverse may be the poorest stake without press of toll. How frugal is the chariot that bears a human soul? It means that a book is like a sheep that it doesn't cost anything to travel across the sea of literature. I wanted to conclude this podcast episode by sharing something personal that may help you. I had some reading problems as a child in my primary school class. I was the last one that learned to read for several reasons that I don't want to list including psychological pressure from Children that call me stupid and down and you know what I did, I improve myself. And with the help of an older neighbor, I turned to be the best in a few months and that helped me to get stronger. Later, I have a age of hate. I write a book in front of my class and everyone, including my teacher was shocked if people say that you're stupid, you should fight and improve yourself to show that you are not stupid that you have qualities kind. People will understand they would help you even if you don't want their help. And now goodbye for now. Exo exo from Anita Miles.
