The lavender lab is a research lab that focuses on three main areas. One understanding forces that influence the health of historically Minor Ized people, including LGBT Q plus and the black indigenous and people of color. Two, understanding the impact of these forces on mental health and substance use and three understanding resilience factors that support these groups, health and well-being due to preexisting power structures, many marginalized people experience unequal treatment and exclusion. They may also face stressful experiences based on oppression related to their identities which can include subtle or noticeable attacks from others. These attacks can lead people to internalize these experiences and develop shame about their identities. Marginalized people can also experience multiple intersecting and combined forms of oppression based stress related to their intersecting identities. Being repeatedly under attack by these stressors can impact the health of Minor Ized people in negative ways. Our lab aims to understand how these stresses are associated with negative mental health outcomes along with how they could play a role in impacting health related behaviors such as alcohol or drug use. Our lab also works to identify factors that can help better protect marginalized people against these negative health outcomes and promote their resilience. Understanding these factors allows us to design culturally affirming approaches to help reduce oppression based stressor, improve minorities, people's health and promote health equity. Ultimately, we work towards improving the health of our community so that we can all flourish and thrive.
