You know, my dad always used to say to me, your eyes are bigger than your stomach, especially when it came to dessert. Your Christmas devotional today from the Christmas devotion book is titled Saving Room For Dessert. You know, if there's ever a meal when you are tempted to overeat, it's Christmas dinner. It's hard to convince yourself that one more helping of mashed potatoes could ever be a bad idea. But at some point, you might realize that all those second helpings were a terrible mistake. This is usually right about the time someone asked you if you saved room for dessert as good as those extra mashed potatoes might have been a piece of pumpkin pie would have been even better. Can you relate? Have you ever overindulged? And as a result and missed out on something better when Jesus called the first disciples, they were busy living their lives. Luke five drives a group of fishermen who are washing their nets at that very moment. Disappointed by a poor catch. Jesus taught them for a short while and then he told them to cast their nets again and miraculously the nets came up completely full and at that moment, the fishermen could have stayed and enjoyed the benefits of Jesus's visit. They would have had made a lot of money at market and filled their bellies for some time. But they would have missed out on the far greater blessing of walking side by side with our savior. They made the wise decision and left everything and followed him. We all have certain things that give us the illusion of fulfillment. I mean, we may think wealth or fame or a certain relationship will bring us satisfaction. And if we aren't careful, we will fill ourselves with the things of this world. When God has far better things in store, gorging on the world's offerings can leave us wishing we had chosen more wisely. But the way of Christ never leads to regret. So as we pick and choose what we put on our plates this day, may we carefully consider whether each thing brings true fulfillment?
