Nursing care involves a wide range of activities, from carrying out complicated technical procedures to something as seemingly simple as holding a hand. Nursing is a blend of science and art. Today 3.6 million nurses in the United States practice in over 200 different specialties, such as anesthesia, mental health, school nursing, cardiac care, pediatrics, surgery, oncology, obstetrics. In geriatrics, they are caregivers, administrators, innovators and policymakers. Nursing is the largest of the health professions and the foundation of the nation's healthcare workforce.
