The tornado Dorothy lived in the middle of the great Kansas Prairie with her Aunt Em and Uncle Henry when she stood in the doorway of their little farmhouse, all she could see on every side was flat gray land baked hard by the sun. When Dorothy had first come to live on the farm, every time she laughed or her little doctor to bucked Aunt Em had jumped with fright. Uncle Henry never laughed psalm and stone. There's a tornado coming! He called to his wife while he ran to the cow bon. Aunt Em dropped her swing machine and turned to her knees. Come quickly, dirty! She shouted over the howling wind. Run for the seller. Dorothy was at the door in an instant, but Toto, terrified by the noise, jumped out of her arms and ran back into the house as Aunt Em rushed out to pull open the door to the seller, the only safe place to hide during the tornado, she did not notice Dorothy racing back inside the little farmhouse to save her dog.
