Toffee Man by Cliff McClelland in a small little town just exactly like yours. Not important enough for those he slept here. Tours lived a pretty young mom with a magical touch for all baking and making of candy and such. Her three Children. They watched, although no one could speak as her Christmas concoctions would boil and would peak warm, sweet smells filled the air until they just couldn't bear it and asked, Mother, can we have candy to share? The mom turned with her spatula covered in sweets and her kids eyes glazed over like warm, crispy treats. Give me just a few minutes, she said, and I'll tell you of dangers that lie behind every sweet smell. Then she turned, and she mixed and aromas did rise such that if she had opened her windows surprise. She'd have had a long line from her door to the street filled with hungry young tummies just waiting to eat. And when she had finished and checked it five times to be sure, the mom placed the pan inside her refrigerator, and she turned to the Children whose jaws hit the floor when they saw all those sweets disappear behind the door now, you know, said the mom, and I guess I should dare to say her name was Catherine. Just to be fair, she sat down, cross her Children and clean up for glasses, well coated in sugar and eggs and molasses. I'll repeat how she started in case you forgot. Now you know, said the mom, that good sweets can't be bought because love is what makes every candy complete. And without it, no chocolate, no brittle, no treat could be ever as perfect as those that I made. But, dear mother, said Kylie, her daughter, I ache for just one little taste of the toffee in there in that cold, cold refrigerator. I can't bear it to think that we can't have just one little bit of your toffee. Oh, please, or we'll all throw a fit. And with that, all the Children they fell on the floor with a scream and a bellow they beat on the door. Logan scared the poor cat who was curled around the tree. Harrison is a pirate, declared World War three all the while. What did Catherine do? Nothing at all. She just sat in her chair and she took in it all. When the Children were tired, they lay on the rugs, all their energy gone like three meek little slugs. If you're finished, their mom said, I'll tell you all why you must wait for your toffee. I promise I won't lie.
