The Army of the Potomac, in an attempt to slip behind the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia, which was hunkered down in a nearly impregnable position in Fredericksburg, some 12 miles to the east, marched into the wilderness from the north and west. The Confederates discovered the federal maneuver in time and intercepted the larger army just as it was forging eastward from Chancellorsville. The resulting battle left 30,000 casualties in its weak. Many who died were buried where they fell. We're never buried it all.
