The large intestine is made up of the colon and rectum. When you develop cancer. In the large intestine, it is called colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the US. It kills over 50,000 Americans per year, yet it is entirely preventable and can be cured if found early. The average risk of developing colorectal cancer during your life is about 5%. That's five out of every 100 people. So what exactly is colon cancer and why do we look for it? Well, most people did not have any symptoms or a family history of colorectal cancer when they're diagnosed because symptoms often don't appear until it's too late. Colorectal cancer is sometimes called a silent killer. This is why starting at age 50, we recommend screening or looking for signs of colorectal cancer with either a colonoscopy or a stool test.
