Some consumers of health care and some health care providers have voiced the need for examination of human rights abuses of persons stigmatized by the health care system. These stigmatized medically ill persons include those who have mental illnesses, those who are H. I. V. Positive and those who have undergone transgender surgeries or treatments. These are abuses that can result in inadequate care and lead to undue stress, worsening of physical illness and even death. By assuming that persons with certain illnesses are bad, disgusting or even just unusual health care workers fail to acknowledge and understand that the psychosocial issues of these people are similar to those of others and that the same nursing interventions for anger, anxiety, city or grief are applicable. Examples of human rights abuse include the following failure to fully investigate somatic complaints made by emergency department clients with a history of psychiatric illness, avoidance of contact with or refusal to care for persons who are stigmatized which results in worsening illness or death. Hasty labeling with a psychiatric dia gnosis and prescription of anti psychotic drugs for persons who are experiencing the normal emotional responses to chronic physical illness and inappropriate psychiatric admission of persons who are on medical units or in nursing homes based on the financial needs of the institution, or on the staff's inability to manage emotional responses to physical illness or the aging process
